An expertly performed facelift can “set back the clock” and make you look younger, more rested and rejuvenated. For instance, a facelift procedure is designed to soften and smooth the deep lines from the corners of the nose and mouth, to correct the jowls along the edge of the jaw line and to tighten the excess sagging skin of the neck. However, facelift surgery is best left to an experienced and talented plastic surgeon, well-versed in advanced techniques, to improve the skin and definition of the face and neck.

Am I a Candidate for a Facelift?

If you are showing visible signs of aging, including deep wrinkles, loss of volume in the cheeks, jowls, and loose skin in the lower face and neck area, you may be a candidate for a facelift.

The first step to choosing any facial cosmetic surgery is to meet with Dr. Katz for a complimentary informational consultation.  First, Dr. Katz examines your face, noting the severity of your wrinkles, skin softness and excess skin. Next, he will inquire about your ideal cosmetic outcome and use this information to put together a treatment plan, outlining his strategic approach.  This treatment plan will guide him during the procedure to achieve a desirable outcome that is both natural and youthful looking.

What Happens During Surgery?

Since there are several approaches to the facelift procedure, Dr. Katz adjusts his techniques depending on your unique needs.

A well performed facelift is not just an excess skin removal procedure, but rather a Facelift surgery should also include tightening the muscles deep to the skin.  This is achieved by first separating the skin from the SMAS (superficial muscular aponeurotic layer). Next, the underlying cheek and neck muscles are tightened and re-suspended.  Additionally, excess neck fat is removed, the skin is repositioned and excess skin is removed.

Dr. Katz  believes that facial volume loss, occurring from the aging process, should also be addressed during a facelift.  Therefore, a facelift with fat transfer might be recommended to correct volume loss.

Surgical incision placement is also very important.  Incisions are made in the temple area, extend in a natural line in front of the ears, around the back of the earlobe and into the hair behind the ear.  A small submental horizontal incision is placed beneath the chin.  However, as the incisions heal they become difficult to see and well hidden.  Therefore, there is no need to alter hairstyles.

What Is the Recovery Like?

After surgery, Dr. Katz and his staff will provide detailed instructions on caring for the incisions, taking the prescribed medications to prevent infection, and restrictions on activity. He will schedule several follow-up visits, during recovery, to check the healing progress, remove sutures and advise when to return to work, exercise, and other normal activities.  Therefore, it is important to follow all of these instructions to reduce the risk of developing post-operative complications.

Minor bruising, swelling, and slight discomfort are common in the days following surgery. Any pain can be alleviated with prescription oral medication. The side effects will subside within a week or two.
