In many cultures, a full breast size has become the standard of beauty for women. Many women with naturally small breasts or those who have lost volume in their breasts due to pregnancy or weight loss desire a fuller bust in order to gain more confidence in their appearance. Since breast shape and size cannot be altered by exercise or other natural methods, women choose to enhance the size and shape of their breasts with breast augmentation surgery. Breast Augmentation also helps correct asymmetry of the breasts.
Dr. Warren J. Katz provides breast implants at his Dallas cosmetic surgery office. Dr. Katz uses the most advanced techniques and latest breast implant technology to provide his patients with fuller breasts and improved self-esteem.
WHAT IS BREAST AUGMENTATION?
Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure involving the insertion of implants to enlarge and shape the breasts. Depending upon the needs and desires of the patient, either saline or silicone breast implants are used.
To perform the procedure, standard incisions are placed around the areola (periareolar), in the crease beneath the breasts (inframammary) or through the armpit (axillary). Once the incisions are made, Dr. Katz will place the implant beneath the breast tissues, either above or below the muscle covering the chest wall, based on the desired look of the patient. The placement of the implant generally depends on the individual’s body type.
During the initial consultation, Dr. Katz works with the patient to determine the size, shape and look that not only fulfills their desires but achieves the best aesthetic result. Using this information, Dr. Katz will select the implant with the best size, shape and consistency to achieve the desired result.
Surgery and Recovery
Breast augmentation surgery is performed on an outpatient basis using IV Sedation. At Dr. Katz’s state-of-the-art Dallas surgical facility, the procedure is completed within 1.5 to 2 hours. After surgery, the patient will be sent home for recovery. Patients may experience some discomfort as the breast tissues recover, but minimal pain medication is required. Most of Dr. Katz’s breast implants patients are able to return to work and resume most regular activities within four days of the procedure. However, strenuous activities involving the upper body should be avoided for a few weeks after the procedure.
Dr. Katz will follow up with each patient in the weeks after the procedure to ensure that the recovery process is going well and to ensure that there are no complications.

How Can I Choose the Right Cup Size for Me?
Choosing the correct breast implant size can be a tough decision. It is important to note that “cup size” is not necessarily the most accurate measure as they tend to differ between bra manufacturers. Instead, your plastic surgeon will discuss desired implant size in terms of ccs (cubic centimeters), generally ranging from 240 to 1,000.
During the pre-op consultation, Dr. Katz will discuss your goals to better understand your ideal look and aspirations. Dr. Katz will then take into account your body size, body type, and characteristics of your tissues to make a suggestion for what will be the most natural-looking result with the quickest and easiest recovery. While the decision still ultimately comes down to you, it is important to take Dr. Katz’s recommendations into account. If you attempt to take on a breast implant size that is too large, your risk of tissue damage and overstretching increases greatly. On the other hand, if you choose an implant size that is too small, you may be dissatisfied with the results.
Will a Certain Number of “CCS” in a Breast Implant Produce a Certain Cup Size?
Although bra cup sizes differ between manufacturers, in general you can follow this bra cup size to cc conversion chart:
How Do I Know if I Need a Breast Lift?
The factors that need to be examined to determine if you need a breast lift in addition to a breast augmentation are in regards to your nipples and your skin laxity. If your nipples are below the level of your breast fold or if the skin appears as if it has begun to hang or droop, you might want to consider a breast lift. If you choose not to, your implant may appear to sit too high on the chest in regards to the nipple or will not provide you with the desired youthfulness or volume.
How Often Do I Need to Replace My Breast Implants?
A big question people have before undergoing a breast augmentation procedure is, how often do breast implants need to be replaced? While the common myth about breast implants is that they need to be replaced every few years, the truth is, it varies greatly from patient to patient. Some patients get lucky and the implants last for the rest of their lives. Others (about 20% of patients) will experience leaking or deflating within the first seven to 10 years.
Can I Get Cleavage from a Breast Augmentation?
A breast augmentation is only designed to improve the size and shape of your breasts. Typically, if you have breasts that are close together, they will remain close together and if you have breasts that are naturally far apart, they will remain far apart after the procedure.
Will I be able to Breast-feed after a Breast Augmentation?
Depending on the type of procedure, breast augmentations may or may not affect breast-feeding. If you have functioning breast tissue prior to the procedure you should be able to continue breastfeeding. An incision around the nipple increases the risk of not being able to breastfeed. During your consultation, Dr. Katz will discuss your current or future pregnancy goals to tailor the procedure to your desired lifestyle.
What Are the Risks Involved with Breast Augmentation Surgery?
As with any surgical procedure, there are a number of risks involved with breast augmentation surgery. These can be partially mitigated by choosing an experienced plastic surgeon. Potential complications include:
- Adverse reaction to anesthesia
- Loss of sensation in the nipple
- Implant rupture or necessity for revision surgery
- Not being able to breastfeed
Who is NOT a Good Candidate for a Breast Augmentation?
Patients that may not be a good candidate for breast augmentation include:
- Women with an active infection or ongoing health issues
- Women that are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- Women that are under 18 or do not have fully developed breasts
- Women with unrealistic expectations for the outcome of the procedure
